Toronto Vintage Costume Jewelry Club Lecture

I am delighted to be invited to lecture for the Toronto Vintage Costume Jewelry Club. I will be speaking about a few of my favorite designers who are relatively unknown, as well as the importance of unsigned beauties.
I will also talk about areas of collecting costume jewelry that I feel have been neglected and that will be tomorrow's treasures. These are new subjects that have not been addressed, and I think it will be an exciting discussion with lots of audience participation!

Two Must-Have Books

I was given two amazing books for the holidays that all fashion enthusiasts should own. Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty delves into the designer's full career, from his small beginner label to the huge fashion house he would become, challenging social and political ideals every step of the way through his designs and avant-garde installations.

The next is Daphne Guinness by Valerie Steele. Guinness, the subject of this book, is renowned for her style and collection of haute couture. As both a patron and inspiration to today's major designers, Guinness' candid interview with author Steele, the origins and character of her sense of style come to light. It's littered with eye candy!

It takes a lot to be considered a true fashion icon, and both of these books illustrate the influence these two had and have on the world of fashion. Get them here and here!

George Eastman House 2011

We were so happy to return to the George Eastman House to do a second trunk show to benefit the museum. The buzz was hot and people came in droves! The show was a great success and for such a good cause.

We love educating people about vintage. From Rochester locals all the way to visitors from Rome (NY!), people were enthused to learn more about the collection. The room looked beautiful, with our selection perfectly laid out and ready to be admired, tried on, and taken home.

Cameos Take Centre Stage

The romance of the cameo always reminds me of years gone by. However the nostalgia of these tokens have been breathed new life for the Fall and Winter seasons. Canada's favourite fashion magazine, FLARE, has featured a great editorial illustrating the new ways cameos are making their appearances.

We particularly love how D&G made a huge statement with them in these earrings!

Grace Kelly: From Movie Star to Princess

One of Canada's national treasures is the TIFF Bell Lightbox, head office of the Toronto International Film Festival as well as an innovative theatre.
The Lightbox has just opened a retrospective exhibition entitled Grace Kelly: From Movie Star to Princess. It will showcase her history in film and fashion, including her 1954 Oscar gown and other vintage couture. As well as her clothing, CTVC curated a small collection of 1950s jewels reflective of her style at both the height of her career and as a princess.

The jewels are for sale with a percentage of proceeds benefiting TIFF's wonderful programming. We would love to hear any feedback from visitors!

Daphne Guinness Exhibition

My son and daughter-in-law attended the opening of the Daphne Guinness exhibition at F.I.T., NY last week. It was exciting to see many designer icons such as Oscar de la Renta, Valentino, Zac Posen, and Calvin Klein. But the highlight of the show was Daphne and her extraordinary wardrobe. Daphne is a taste setter in the world of fashion. The exhibit let's you wander thru an exciting choice of outfits that knock your breath away. She is truly an original! If you are in or near NY, this exhibit is a must see.

Open this issue of Glamour magazine and you will see everyone's favourite new star, Janelle Monae. Look a little closer and she's wearing CTVC vintage Chanel earrings!

Monae is known for her classic tux-y look. Naturally CTVC was the perfect choice to accessorize. She is the perfect example of how vintage and a timeless look will never go out of style.

Glamour disclosed some of Monae's tips to find your own style. One of her main points was "Be timeless. I don't like trends; in photos, I'm not expired."

I was so thrilled to be featured in an up-and-coming Canadian fashion magazine called Plaid. Headed by Odessa Parker, it is a trail-blazing look at offbeat style. I sat for a great interview with Parker for the summer edition of the magazine, and was delighted when she brought a copy to me!

With all the wonderful color that has been appearing this year in the fashion industry, who ever thinks of black and white anymore?? I do!! I have a fabulous story of black and white jewelry on New Additions this week.

These treasures can be worn in all seasons and add a punch to whatever outfit you imagine.

My Tip: Don't think of rhinestone jewlery as just appropriate for the evening. I wear them with jeans and a tee shirt as well for an extra pop!

Juicy Couture and CTVC

One of our favourite style icons, Samantha Beckermand (1/3 of the dynamic Beckerman Bite Plate trio), recently rocked 1920s celluloid bracelets from us at CTVC as part of a collaboration with Juicy Couture.

These types of bracelets have become extremely rare! They're from the 1920s and are crafted from celluloid, a type of plastic often referred to as "French Ivory". The crystals adorning them really make them sparkle. They look completely fantastic in groups, something Samantha fully embraced with this deco rock n' roll look!

Midnight in Paris

I just saw Woody Allen's Midnight In Paris. It was fabulous - the best in years. Makes you want to hop on the next plane to Paris, not to mention wanting to take Owen Wilson as your escort!!!

And, as a side note, the mesh purse that stole the show in several scenes is just like one that that we have!

Connecting Cloth, Culture and Art

Last night I did a fundraising lecture for the Textile Museum of Canada. The topic: Jewelry Trends Through The Decades. We had a slide show which wowed the audience! There was a great buzz and high energy level throughout the evening. Collectors, artisans and novices alike all connected. We finished off with a small sale and exhibition of the collection, which went over very well. Overall it was a great experience and I was so glad to support the great programs at the Textile Museum. Fun with Florals

Floral is hot for summer. Feminine, flirty, funky, colourful and sweet, it can be dressed up or down and make an eye-catching statement. Some may find such patterns hard to accessorize, fearing it will be "too much"! Never fear, it's all in how it is accesorized that can make the outfit!

The options are really endless. Bold plastics and tribal wood jewelry give the florals a more casual or edgy feel, perfect for a day on the town or travel. The beauty of accessorizing is that the same outfit can be transformed in so many ways!

Textile Museum Lecture

Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum is presently showing a marvelous exhibition of Van Cleef & Arpels. Its timeless pieces have been worn by style icons including the Duchess of Windsor, Grace Kelly and Elizabeth Taylor. This event has been highly successful with thousands of visitors a day!
Copper-Hewitt and Carole Tanenbaum Vintage collection are collaborating on a trunk show of the vintage costume jewelry designers that were influenced by Van Cleef & Arpels ,including Trifari, Boucher, Reja and Pennino.

Remembering An Icon

Legendary actress, beauty and jewelry maven Elizabeth Taylor passed away this morning at the age of 79. In 2002, her coffee table book My Love Affair With Jewelry showcased her vast collection of beautiful gems.

In 2007 Taylor said "the important thing to know about jewelry is that you never really own it; you’re simply a custodian of beautiful things. Jewelry is something that strikes a chord in you, or it doesn’t. But that chord can set you all a-quiver.”
We couldn't agree more. Ms. Taylor, we'll always remember your legacy!

Fenwick

Just returned home from London and discovered a wonderful department store, Fenwick on Bond Street.

Although it's been around for decades, we don't hear of it much in North America. They have completely modernized the store, with an array of young British designers and upscale European designers who do not yet have great exposure "across the pond". And... They have the best sock department ever (a weakness of mine)! The interior reminds me of Barney's NY. When you are next in London , and you want to truly see what's going on in the European and British Fashion World, make Fenwick a destination!

Kenneth J Lane at The Norton Museum

Just visited the Norton Museum, West Palm Beach, and saw the KJL Exhibit. Kudos to the museum for an excellent installation. The jewels reflected Lane's varying styles from his oriental inspired to his recognizable animal jewels. Although his later pieces do not reflect the quality of his early works, Lane is an icon in the world of costume jewelry. Check out our New Additions for some wonderful KJLs.

Splendour of India's Royal Courts

The Maharaja exhibit opened at the Art Gallery of Ontario this past Saturday to an overwhelming, and enthusiastic crowd. Beckerman Bite Plate

The Beckerman fashion designers were tres elegante for the British Invasion celebration at the Bay Toronto last Thursday. They honoured crowns from our collection that were fit for a queen, designed by Robert Sorrell. Sorrell, one of our favourite contemporary designers, works on each piece individually. His jewels are museum quality. I personally have many in my private collection.
Bravo to Caillianne and Samantha Beckerman for their style and delight in dressing! They are great. Please check out their blog for a unique take on contemporary style. They continue to delight us.

Toronto Bead Society

I lectured to a wonderful, talented group of beaders last night. They loved the slides of Coppola e Toppo, Haskell and the other Greats. I am sure the designs and the bead work will inspire them to create masterpieces of their own! They are having a Fall Fair on November 6th (10am-5pm) and 7th (11am-5pm):
Location: CNIB, 1929 Bayview (at Kilgour)
Admission: $5 per day, $8 for two.

It should be fun! There are demos, classes, shopping, and so much more.

Classic, Elegant, Perfect: Pearls!

In Vintage there has always been a wide variety of simulated pearls available. These range from plastic, to ceramic and every media available. The highest quality ones to look for are glass, which are then coated with many layers of a pearlized finish. They are often individually knotted, which shows the piece is painstakingly handmade. The added benefit is that the pearls don't slide around! The lustre resembles the real thing, as does the weight. I bought a 50s collection of these beauties and am offering their timeless elegance to you!

Every bride wants that special look for her wedding. I was blown away by the great stylist work of Charlotte Carson (left image) for EWedding and Kurt Salt (center and right images) for Wedluxe. They created these wonderful, elegant and contemporary ensembles for brides who want to step outside the box and be truly unique. Vintage is always a great choice for brides, as the history and integrity adds such a rich element to one's wedding. It answers the old adage that a bride should wear 'something old' on her wedding day! These vintage treasures can also be passed down to the next generation, invoking even more meaning. CTVC Select: Irregular Stones!

There are many vintage jewels that go unrecognized. Often, they can be more interesting than many signed pieces.
Today we start off with a peak of our brand new line: CTVC Select, an affordable collection of vintage!
One example is unsigned jewelry made with fancy cut stones. Whenever we see a piece that has irregular shaped stones: heart, kite, teardrop shaped- we know that they are not high production pieces, as these cuts were not mass produced.
I am attracted to these unfoiled beauties! Their design strengths lie in the irregular cut stones. Take a look at our examples. This selection is great for grouping. Keep on the look-out for these unsung heroes!

Adorned in Chanel

Coco Chanel changed the way women dress forever. She freed women from corsets and heavy piles of lace, instead choosing to dress the body under the clothes rather than change it. Chanel coined the term "costume jewelry", specially designing fun accessories of pot metal and other materials to complete her "simple modern" look.
This technique of adorning women with beautiful jewelry was suited to her vision, where modern women were able to accessorize themselves without having to fight extra layers or constricting shoulder pads.

Today we feature Chanel earrings from the 1950s-1990s, all of which exemplify her timeless look! As the original lover of costume jewels, Ms. Chanel put it best:

Yay George Eastman House!

If we needed any proof that the George Eastman House was the greatest institution to support, or that costume jewelry is the 'It' fashion accessory, our trunk show is proof enough. George Eastman House here we come!

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the George Eastman House, it is a National Treasure in Rochester, New York. It houses one of the world's most important photography and film collections. Open to the public and just a stone's throw from so many geographic locations, it's worth the trip.

Oh, and by the way, CTVC is having a fundraising trunk show Dec 4th and 5th from 11am-4pm . I will also be speaking about the Art of Collecting on Saturday at 2pm.
It should be fun .

Panel Discussion at the Textile Museum

Wednesday nights’ event was a hit! I was joined by Julia Grieve and Nathalie Atkinson. The turn-out for our lively discussion, about fashion’s new trend, ‘upcycling’, was terrific- a full house! We focused our discussion on the creation of beautiful objects made from materials considered to have no intrinsic value. Also the idea of embellishing the "old" into new designs. There were some interesting comments and questions from the audience as well, and I would love to hear your thoughts on the subject!
