The Kimonos of Ichimaru Exhibition at the Textile Museum of Canada

posted on: Friday, May 9, 2014

This fabulous exhibition features one of the most famous geishas, Ichimaru, of the 20th century by displaying a collection of her kimonos along with other person effects. She has left geishahood in the 1930's to pursue a career as a recording artist and applied her experience as a geisha while performing.

Her talent as a vocalist and musician led her to become a unique figure in the social history of the twentieth-century Japan.

Ichimaru's style and taste, along with a glimpse of the Japanese culture,  is revealed through the collection of the beautifully hand-crafted kimonos.

Above is one of the Kimono's decorated with images of peonies, pheonix birds and cherry blossoms. It is decorated with gold and silk threaded embroidery; silver and gold leaf stencilling and demask figured silk satin.

From Geisha to Diva: The Kimonos of Ichimaru exhibition curated by the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria is open at the Textile Museum of Canada until May 25, 2014. For more details about the exhibition visit the Textile Museum website.

Stay Fabulous,
Carole
